Luiza Maia

Luiza Maia is a Brazilian artist currently based in San Francisco, where she received an MFA degree from the Academy of Art University (AAU). The artist's taste for aesthetics dates back to her undergraduate education in fashion design in Rio de Janeiro, where she later worked as a costume designer for television shows. Luiza discovered her passion for fine art when she spent the summer of 2017 in New York City studying at the School of Visual Arts and at the Arts Students League of New York. She moved to California the following year.
As an emerging artist, she has participated in group shows in San Francisco galleries and has completed multiple private commissions. She has already been featured in three issues of Vanity Fair UK, as well as in Southwest Art Magazine in the Artistic Excellence competition in 2020. An award-winning artist in the Still Life category at AAU's Spring Show 2021, Luiza was featured in Juxtapos magazine along with her peers.
Passionate about realism and abstraction, the artist is able to express her love of color and compositional harmony in both styles. A self-proclaimed globetrotter, Luiza's travel experiences have inspired her to create the Around the World series, in which she abstracts urban landscapes and marks them with a zip code. For the still life representational series Nostalgia, she draws inspiration from past cultures and their aesthetics, an interest she developed during her work as a costume designer.
