George Speck
George Speck is a prolific, versatile painter, woodcut artist and printer. Born in Charlottesville and raised in Waynesboro, he holds a B.A. degree from the University of Virginia, and pursued his artistic studies at the Richmond Professional Institute. He earned an MA in English at the City College of New York, and in 1968 he was awarded a doctorate in Art Therapy from NYU. This unique degree – a combination of art, art education, psychology, and ancient symbolism - was the first program of its kind in the country. He also attended the Art Students' League and studied art in Rome and Paris for two years.
Since 1961, the widely acclaimed artist has had 40 one-man shows, as well as numerous two and three-man shows in the USA and Europe. Critics have praised Speck’s light and color-filled impasto canvases in oil, which are in public and private collections all over the world. His oils in rich, juxtaposed hues have the translucency of watercolors. His color woodcuts demonstrate an exceptional, delicate handling of line and color, using an ancient printing technique. These and his papier mache sculptures of animals, called “three-dimensional paintings,” have been exhibited in museums, universities, and galleries around the country and abroad.
Speck’s publications include 250 pen-and-ink drawings for Dell Publications’ Look and Learn French, as well as illustrations for school catalogues. He has written numerous articles for the Journal of Art Therapy and for several Long Island newspapers. He is currently working on a series of books about the role color plays in our everyday environment.
Dr. Speck currently resides in New York City, but his roots in central Virginia inspire much of his work. He leaves the city for frequent travels all over the world in search of subjects and stimulation for his artwork. He is also a photographer, pianist, opera enthusiast, theater-lover, a graphoanalyst, and an astrologer.
